DON ZILLA ‘Ekizikiza Mubwengula’

Programming the unpredictable and the unsettling

Challenge yourself to listen through Don Zilla’s debut album and see if your mind can settle for at least a few seconds. It’s a tough ask. The East African producer is programmed to programme the unpredictable and the unsettling: rhythms of fire surge and converge on your mind, forcing you to be actively engaged. His 2019 EP From The Cave To The World indicated his fearsome electronic prowess, but this oversteps expectations by some distance. There’s an industrial fusion at work which slams trap and dub-step off the walls, and filters them through some homegrown styles. An exhilarating listen, but you’ll have to have your wits about you.
