EXUM ‘Xardinal Coffee’

Silken hip hop and idiosyncratic r'n'b

If you’re like us and this is your first encounter with Exum you’ll probably also consider him a fine producer of silken hip hop and idiosyncratic r’n’b. Others, who knew him in his previous guise, may scratch their heads and wonder how this NFL player came to drop one of the standout debut albums of the year. Antone Exum Jr wasn’t your average football pro and always had music coursing through his veins, but this is still a curveball that most seasoned music or football fans could not have foreseen. Crediting his producer, Eric Samkopf, with providing the necessary alchemy, it’s still Exum who is the star of this show; the coolest kid on the block, with a flair for androgynous art forms, and a soupçon of surrealism, proves a leopard really can change its spots.
