A première classe trip to the outer reaches of jazz

Music has its own chicken or egg conundrum – is it the ears and brain or heart with which we first consume music? Either way, most of us quickly form deeply lasting bonds to artists and genres. What can be overlooked are the labels quietly handling the multifaceted task of delivering to us what we love. One such remarkable operation is Rogue Arts of Paris. The independent imprint focuses on jazz at the freer end of the spectrum and have amassed over one hundred releases. Here we have acts ranging from the Art Ensemble Of Chicago, to a number of our faves such as Jeff Parker and Mary Halvorson, in a myriad of group settings.

Laying Demons To Rest features the celebrated improvisational guitarist Fred Frith in a live setting alongside the boundary defying Portuguese trumpeter, Susana Santos Silva. The pair team up for an elongated joint composition of typically unpredictable delights. We move from enchanting melodic motifs to frequencies outside of any conventional notions, traversing unknown majestically mind-blowing pathways.

If you fancy a trip to the outer reaches, Rogue Arts will fly you première classe.
