MELVIN GIBBS ‘4+1 Equals 5 For May 25′ EP

George Floyd is honoured with boundless creativity

Melvin Gibbs, the composer, producer, and bassist extraordinaire, has visited places regarded as some of the holiest sites on the planet. But when he stood at the intersection of 38th and Chicago in Minneapolis, he could only liken the vibe to a place of remembrance in Hiroshima, where the first atomic bomb was detonated. We won’t attempt to paraphrase Gibbs’ creative process for 4 + 1 equals 5 for May 25 as it should be read in full to give you further context. However, an important aspect is the theme of duality, as he sets out to capture both the peace he felt in the aftermath, and the vibration of the cataclysmic event. The project honours George Floyd with insight, compassion, and boundless creativity. Partly a free and improvised piece with a strong narrative thread – not only through the music, but with words from Kokayi, the Grammy nominated improvisational vocalist. And, partly, a deeply spiritual piece which grasps the essence of many peoples’ disillusionment and anger at Floyd’s murder.
