NATURAL INFORMATION SOCIETY WITH EVAN PARKER ‘Descension’ (Out Of Our Constrictions)

Natural Information Society provide the perfect foil for Evan Parker

Now in his late 70s, some might view Evan Parker as an elderly statesman of jazz. However, as with any of his playing, preconceptions evaporate the moment you hear his tone and attack. Snaking in on soprano sax he moulds his path to provide a perfect foil to Natural Information Society’s unconventional interplay. Circular breathing isn’t something every horn player can master, and it makes our chest ache just listening, but the microtonal variations as he re-examines each line are mesmerising. In turn NIS track and counter in glorious unison on bass clarinet, harmonium and guimbri (a form of bass lute). The drumming is only one method of time keeping, as they all pulse together in this otherworldly seventy five minute set from London’s cafe OTO.
