TALKING THERAPY ENSEMBLE ‘Talking Therapy’

Jul 13, 2022 | Jazz, Reviews

A torrent of therapeutic free jazz

Maybe free jazz is the most therapeutic force on the planet. The liberty to express oneself at will, transcending all conventions, is a thrill ride for performer, and is often cited as being a spiritual quest.

Led by Emma-Jean Thackray, Talking Therapy Ensemble also consist of Binker Golding on saxophone, Matt Gedrych on bass, and Dougal Taylor on drums. Together, this force of nature, lead us through a condensed cycle of stages representing trauma and mood.

It’s a virtuosic expression of emotion with many sublime moments. One case in point are the staccato breaks slicing through Panic, as a juxtaposition to the calmer passages amplifies both the silence and outpouring. When the torrent reaches a psychedelic intensity, the instrumentation abates for Shh, a nuanced, and beautiful aftermath. Time to break free.
