TENCI ‘My Heart Is An Open Field’

A surreal debut full of unorthodox, magnetic tales

Playing with the hushed tones of Laura Gibson and Adrienne Lenker, but definitely her own distinctive timbre, Jess Shoman crafts roostsy tunes touched with alien dna. Maybe it’s her high vibrato laden voice, or the ability for the barest of song structures to ensnare and enthral, but there is an element of the otherworldly at play. The passing scenery of animals, fields, people, and changing seasons, suggest a pastoral idyll, but the images become overlapped, and cloaked in mystery, as the serene guitar lines take over. Surrender becomes the only option. Whatever the magical ingredient is, even with repeated listens, this remains a surreal debut full of unorthodox, and yet, magnetic tales.
