TINEKE POSTMA ‘Aria’

Sax and guitar locked in spectacular murmurations

We came for the Bill Frisell vibes, stayed for the sax, and found a Dutch bandleader in full flight. We learnt about Tineke Postma’s saxophone stylings mimicking the human voice, the evolution of the Aria, and its influence on her lyrical melodies. Add in a stunning sleeve, adorned by a Johanna Von Oldershausen collage, and we’re hooked.

With a mix of approaches to composition, Postma keeps the mood taut, and yet, unpredictable, managing to create generous space for melodies to discover innovative angles.

For Still Another Day Ben Monder’s guitar can sail close to Frisell’s celebrated tone, especially from the early 2000s trio outings for ECM (I Have The Room Above Her & Time And Time Again). And, as a foil, Postma’s velveteen timbres dance in vivid unison. This, however, is only one road taken: the appropriately named Lion’s Roar is a platform for sax and guitar to squeal and dive bomb in spectacular murmurations.

Postma emphasises the importance of breath and space to her creative path, and Robert Landfermann’s fulsome supple bass, and Tristan Renfrow’s agile drums, play a fundamental anchoring role throughout this adventurous recording.
