VIOLET COLD ‘Empire Of Love’

Defiant & celebratory blackgaze metal

The intro to Empire Of Love may put you in mind of a sedate Sunday afternoon tv show, however, the euphoric coda to the first track gives you a clue to your true destination. Yes, we’re in blackgaze country – a sub-genre of metal which lets light into the darkness. And, this album is a beacon of defiance and celebration. Because, the sole member of Violet Cold, has met with hatred for his depiction of his country’s flag and the album’s expression of support for the LGBTQ community. It’s sad, nevertheless, important to state these obvious points, but let’s hope this expression of love is met with the positivity it deserves. The music continues its climb skywards matching sonorous female vocals to a cacophonous howl. The biting blastbeats, ferocious guitars, and use of electronica, boost the momentum, and yet, it never outruns a core of tenderness and pride.
